Dollar General Corporation (NYSE: DG) operates as a leading U.S. discount retailer, offering a wide range of everyday essential products to value-conscious consumers through its extensive network of small-box stores. The company provides consumables including packaged food, snacks, beverages, candy, health care products, personal care items, and pet supplies; seasonal merchandise such as cleaning supplies, paper products, and laundry detergents; home products like kitchen utensils, cookware, small appliances, and lighting; apparel comprising casual ladies' apparel, men's apparel, children's apparel, and undergarment products; and other offerings including toys, stationery, batteries, and automotive supplies. Dollar General serves primarily rural and suburban communities across 48 U.S. states, with over 20,000 stores as of late 2025, headquartered in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, where it was founded in 1939 as a family-owned wholesale grocery business before evolving into a public discount retail chain in 1955. In recent years, Dollar General has pursued aggressive expansion, opening approximately 800 new stores in fiscal 2025 and planning further growth into pOpshelf small-format stores targeting urban markets. The company launched its Dollar General Market banner for grocery-focused stores and enhanced its digital capabilities with improved e-commerce platforms and same-day delivery partnerships through services like Instacart. Additionally, Dollar General completed strategic acquisitions of distribution centers to support logistics and announced sustainability initiatives, including investments in energy-efficient store remodels and reduced plastic packaging across product lines.
